Life Around Us

Jambo Reader

Now that I’m recuperating from the ocean passage, the 7 days and nights of blue water, waves, clouds, sun and moonbeams, I am able to focus on the smaller life around me.

While our crew were still in Kenya we shared costs for a 2-week safari to Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo National Parks. Those long days bouncing in a Land Cruiser over rutted roads was no less intense than the passage. But my attention was different. There was so much life around us.

Jon gave me my first bird book, here in Africa in 1980. It hadn’t taken long to spot the difference between a hippo and an elephant. But the birds. OMG. Large, small, perched or flying. Wisps of color, sweet song, piercing whistles. I began to crave knowing them all. Calling out their names, if only in my mind. Or mumbling, “Hello, Beauty. Who are you?”

Bird photography became a passion and life-long challenge.

So here in Kenya, on this whirlwind safari, while my friends ogled over the herds of wildebeest and zebra, I scanned the bushes, skies, and grasses for the birds. A flicker of motion. A glimpse of brilliant blue. What my camera captured falls far short of the thrill of the seeing.

What tiny life has captured your attention recently? A bird? A bug? A spider? The world is so alive, if we only watch more closely.

Cheers,

Sue

PS I think I shared the wrong URL for my new Substack publication called The Memoir Voyage. It’s found here: https://substack.com/@thewritevoyage. Under my email domain, not my name. Sorry for any confusion. I hope you’ll join me. And a big thanks to those who did manage to find me already!
